A suitcase bomb is used to down an airliner. Before he drowns at sea, one of the passengers, Adrian Messenger (Merivale) manages to pass along a few words to a survivor. Before his fateful flight, Messenger had asked a trusted friend, Anthony Gethryn (Scott) to check the people on a list. As Gethryn checks the names on Messenger’s list he finds a series of recent deaths, apparently unconnected. As more people on the list die under suspicious circumstances, Gethryn suspects the deaths are part of a series of murders. With help from Raoul Le Borg (Roux), the survivor of the plane crash, Gethryn finds a pattern in the murders, and a connection to the wealthy family of Jocelyn Bruttenholm (Wynter). Le Borg is smitten by Jocelyn, and competes for her affection with George Brougham (Douglas), a Canadian who has recently rejoined the family. Gethryn must stop the killer from striking again. The climax comes in a masterfully filmed fox hunt. Tony Curtis, Burt Lancaster, Robert Mitchum, and Frank Sinatra have cameo roles under disguise. Music by Jerry Goldsmith.
